This is an announcement we’ve meant to put out in a while. Those who’ve been catching up with us lately may have noticed that we released a new song for a movie soundtrack and played a short showcase in Lisbon last month as a four-piece. The goals were different between us four and Alexandre Rodrigues, so we decided to continue the band without him and with Pedro assuming the lead vocals. It was an amicable separation and we wish Alexandre all the best with all our hearts.

The new songs have been coming out great, more uplifting! We are strongly devoted to them back at our rehearsal headquarters and we can’t wait to see ourselves into the recording studio and work the new record with our favorite producer.

Stay tuned for some news around this summer!

Some months ago we were invited by Telmo Martins to write a song for the soundtrack of his new movie. By that time, we were a little busy with the European Tour, but these last days were spent composing a brand new song, which we will pre-produce in our own studio.
In the next two weeks, we will go back to our favorite studio and work with our favorite producer. We are all really excited about it!... We will keep you updated on our Facebook and Twitter accounts.
The movie is called "Um Funeral à Chuva" and it has already some great bands confirmed for the soundtrack. It will be out on the portuguese theaters by the end of May and you can see the first trailer here!
Meanwhile, we've been upgrading our studio / workstation in Castelo Branco and it looks pretty much like a home now. A lot of new songs are coming, a new record too and some shows are being scheduled for April!

Tour Diary - Day 11 - Paris (France)

No último dia da tour, fomos recebidos com neve logo ao entrar em França. Foi lindo! Era o último concerto e ainda por cima em Paris! Num domingo à noite, partilhámos o palco com duas bandas francesas numa sala underground de que gostámos muito. A noite anterior pesou-nos e neste concerto batemos o record de montagem de palco, concerto e carregar carrinha. Queríamos ir rápido aproveitar Paris e esta provar-nos que era a cidade das luzes. Prestámos-lhe a devida homenagem e dedicámos-lhe a “Paris” dos Friendly Fires, com a Torre Eiffel atrás de nós. Momento que não vamos esquecer nunca! Esse e o dia passado em Versailles, em frente ao Palácio, para onde levámos os instrumentos e vislumbrámos aquela fabulosa vista. We were ready and it was legendary!

On the last day of the tour, we were blessed with snow when entering France. It was beautiful! It was the last show and it was in Paris! On a Sunday night, we shared the stage with two French bands in an underground venue that we really liked. The night before had a strong weight on us and on this show we beat a new world record on putting the backline on stage, show, take off the backline and load the van. We wanted to be quick and go enjoy Paris by night and see the living proof that it is the city of lights. We paid the deserved homage and dedicated her “Paris” of Friendly Fires, with the Eiffel Tower behind us. A moment we won’t forget, ever! So is the day we spent in Versailles, in front of the Palace, where we took some of our gear and memorized the wonderful view. We were ready and it was legendary!

Por vezes os locais que menos esperamos, são aqueles que mais nos surpreendem. Foi exactamente o que aconteceu este sábado à noite. No Luxemburgo vivemos uma noite memorável. Para além de que quando chegámos nos terem recebido em português, o D:qliq é um clube indie, que foi todo ocupado por nós, do primeiro ao terceiro andar, onde se encontram o bar, a sala de concertos e a residência. A seguir ao concerto, esquecemos que tínhamos mais uma longa viagem pela frente horas depois e não arredámos pé da pista da dança. O que é um bocado óbvio quando se tem dois dj’s com t-shirts de Pavement… já podem imaginar! Esperamos poder voltar!

Sometimes the places that we least expect are the ones that amaze us. It was exactly what happened this Saturday night. In Luxembourg we had a night that was memorable. Even when we arrived we were welcomed in Portuguese, D:qliq is an indie club, which was totally occupied by us, from the first to the third floor, where it finds the bar, the stage room and the residence. After the show, we forgot that we had one more long travel ahead of us in some hours and didn’t leave the dance floor. It was hard with the two dj’s with Pavement t-shirts… you can imagine! Hope we can come back!

Tour Diary - Day 9 - Eindhoven (Netherlands)

Pela primeira vez na tour, chegámos muito atrasados ao local marcado para o concerto. Custou sair de Berlim é verdade, mas fomos confrontados com um enorme trânsito que fez de uma viagem de 6 horas parecer um dia inteiro! Tocámos num centro de artes em Eindhoven que nos recebeu muito bem. Depois do soundcheck aproveitámos para conhecer um pouco da cidade, recheada de galerias de arte e muitas e muitas bicicletas, que quase nos atropelavam…

For the first time on the tour, we’ve arrived very late to the venue. It was hard to leave Berlin it’s true, but we were confronted with a huge highway traffic, which made a six hour trip look like an entire day! We played in an Eindhoven’s art center, which received us really well. After soundcheck we turned to the city, with loads of art galleries and lots and lots of bicycles, that almost ran over us…

Tour Diary - Day 8 - Berlin (Germany)

Berlim é um dos nossos destinos de eleição e, neste caso, viemos para fazer o que mais gostamos - tocar, o que é maravilhoso. Frio, muito frio fez-se sentir nesta cidade, como é natural. A abrir as hostes, esteve o Corwood Manual, projecto a solo de Andreas Bonkowski também membro dos I Might Be Wrong e Siva, o Andreas foi uma óptima surpresa e quem nos dera que pudesse continuar na tour connosco.
Com o escasso tempo que tínhamos para conhecer Berlim, fomos convidados pelos nossos amigos Leander para uma festa bem ao estilo da cidade, o Dj Hell tocava num clube improvisado algures na cidade e mesmo sabendo que teríamos poucas horas de sono, não quisemos desperdiçar a oportunidade.
A vontade de voltar a esta cidade tornou-se maior e o que realmente custa em andar em digressão é facto de não termos tempo para conhecer melhor os locais que nos recebem. Faz uma semana desde que partimos de Castelo Branco e parece que passou muito mais tempo. Tem sido uma grande experiência. Holanda é o país que se segue.

Berlin is on our wish list and in this case, we had come to do what we love most – play live, which is wonderful. Cold, so much cold was being felt in this city, as natural. Opening the night was Corwood Manual, solo project of Andreas Bonkowski, also member of I Might Be Wrong and Siva, Andreas was a great surprise and we wish he could continue on tour with us.
With few time to know Berlin, we were invited by our friends Leander to a party, in the style of the city, Dj Hell was playing in an improvised club somewhere in the city and even though we had a small amount of hours of sleep, we didn’t want to miss it.
The will to get back in this city had grown and what really costs with being on tour is the fact that we don’t have time to know better the places where we play. It’s been one week since we left Castelo Branco and it feels like it’s been more time.
It has been an amazing experience. Netherlands is next.

Tour Diary - Day 7 - Hamburg (Germany)

Hamburgo era uma das cidades mais esperadas da Tour.
Chegámos bem cedinho e pela primeira vez conseguimos fazer umas compras e visitar a famosa Reeperbahn onde se encontra o clube onde íamos tocar, o Prinzenbar. Um dos melhores clubes de Hamburgo e talvez o mais bonito onde já tocámos, grande nomes já por aqui passaram! Sentimo-nos em casa e a sonhar por uma sala como esta em Portugal… A produção e organização dos clubes alemães é do outro Mundo, por aqui sabem mesmo tratar bem os músicos e nada falha!
O som esteve perfeito e este foi até agora o melhor concerto da Tour, até tivemos direito a confettis e a um graffiti numa parede a uns metros do clube!

Hamburg was one of the most expected cities for this Tour.
We arrived really early and for the first time we have some free time to make some shopping and visit the famous Reeperbahn where Prinzenbar is located. This is one of the best clubs in Hamburg and probably the most beautiful we ever played, amazing bands have already played here! We felt home and dreaming for a venue like this in Portugal… The production and organization of the venues in Germany is amazing, they really know how to take care of musicians and nothing fail!
The sound was perfect and this was, until now the best concert of the Tour, we even had a fan with confettis and a graffiti in a wall near the club!

Tour Diary - Day 6 - Hannover (Germany)

Chegámos a Hannover perto das 16:30h, e era já noite cerrada, algo a que não estamos habituados. A sala onde tocámos fica num centro artístico bem no centro da cidade… residências de estudantes, uma biblioteca, esculturas, skate park, arte espalhada pelas paredes e o Café Glocksee, um clube pequeno e intimo – soou-nos perfeito. Estávamos ansiosos pelo primeiro concerto na Alemanha! Numa entrevista, poucos minutos antes de entrarmos em palco, disseram-nos que nas “Ruby Tuesdays” o clube recebe normalmente cerca de 200 pessoas. O nervosinho fez-se sentir e ficámos surpreendidos ao ver o clube cheio e interessado em nos conhecer. Superou as nossas expectativas.
Amanhã seguimos para Hamburgo e a viagem desta vez vai ser mais curta, felizmente!

We arrived for the first time in Germany at 4:30 pm and it was nighttime already, something that we’re not used to that early in our country. The venue where we had played stays in an arts center in Hannover. As we could visualize, student residencies, a library, sculptures, a skate park, art written all over the walls and Café Glocksee, a small and intimate club – it sounded perfect for us. We were looking forward for our first show in Germany. On an interview, some minutes before entering stage, someone told us that the “Ruby Tuesdays” on the club, get usually an average of 200 people. The anxiety started to be felt and we were surprised with the venue packed and really interested in meeting us. It oversized our expectations.
Tomorrow we’ll follow to Hamburg and the trip this time will be shorter, luckily.

Tour Diary - Day 4 & 5 - Santander (Spain) & Brussels (Belgium)

Santander foi uma espécie de “lufada de ar fresco” momentânea. Passamos a explicar: deixámos de parte o conceito “clubbing”, transportámo-nos para um dos três auditorios do fantástico Palacio de Festivais de Cantabria (para terem uma noção do que estamos a falar, uma especie de Centro Cultural de Belém). Partilhámos palco com meia dúzia de bandas, das quais aconselhamos vivamente a lindíssima Emilie Simon.

O concerto correu muito bem, a sala estava composta e começamos a habituar-nos a sermos super bem recebidos neste país: “…este ha sido nuestro ultimo concierto en España en la gira Europea que estamos haciendo… la sala más bonita que hemos tocado…” seguiram-se os aplausos, acenderam-se as luzes!

Hoje (Segunda-feira), estamos pela primeira vez de viagem para a Alemanha! 1700 km… vai ser bom, é certo! No entanto, duas pequenas paragens: perto de Paris para um jantar merecido e em Bruxelas para recuperar energias.

Santander turned out to be a kind of a spontaneous fresh air on us. We’ll explain: we left the “clubbing” concept behind and traveled ourselves to one of the three auditoriums of the fantastic Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria (kind of like Centro Cultural de Belém, in Lisbon). We shared the stage with half a dozen bands, one of which we suggest, the beautiful Emilie Simon.

The show went really well, the venue was packed and we’re getting used to the greatness of the reception we have in this country: “… this has been our last show in Spain for the European tour… the loveliest venue where we’ve played…” Then came the applauses, the lights turned on!

Today (Monday), we’re for the first time on the way to Germany! 1700 km… it’s going to be really good, for sure! Before that, two short stops: near Paris for a deserved dinner and in Brussels to recover energies.

Tour Diary - Day 3 - Bilbao (Spain)

Após uma visita a Barcelona que soube a pouco, seguiu-se mais uma longa viagem repartida por todos durante 7 horas. Chegámos novamente de noite ao destino, desta vez à Sala Dink, até agora a mais fácil de encontrar. No concerto, experimentámos alguns temas que não fazem parte do alinhamento que definimos para a tour. Fomos muito bem recebidos. No entanto, aproveitámos por ir descansar para no dia seguinte conhecermos Bilbao e o Guggenheim nas poucas horas que tínhamos antes de seguir para Santander.

After a short visit to Barcelona, a seven hour drive came along. We arrived once again by night time, this time at Sala Dink, the easiest venue to found on the tour. At the show we tried other songs, which weren’t on the setlist defined for the tour. We were very well received. Afterwards, we decided to take a rest, since we had few hours to meet Bilbao and Guggenheim Museum on the next day.

Tour Diary - Day 2 - Barcelona (Spain)

Segundo dia de Tour que foi praticamente todo passado na estrada.

Chegámos já de noite a Barcelona e não conseguimos ver quase nada. O clube era o Deposito Legal, um dos mais antigos da cidade, aberto desde 1985 e, por onde passaram já todas a bandas de referência do indie de “nuestros hermanos” e não só...

Este concerto foi, ou melhor, tornou-se especial...se inicialmente tivemos algum receio devido às condições técnicas da sala não serem as melhores, rapidamente isso foi posto de lado quando percebemos que estávamos prestes a tocar para um público que, acima de tudo gosta de música, tem paixão, deixa-se envolver, tem calor... E assim foram os cerca de 50 minutos (com espaço para um pequeno encore), pouco mais de “7 palmos de terra” a separar-nos do público, sem segredos e no fim, a certeza de que Barcelona nos vai voltar a receber muito em breve e, de braços abertos!

Infelizmente, não temos tido acesso à Internet, mas vamos tentar fazer o upload do diário com mais frequência.

Vamos agora a meio da viagem para o terceiro concerto da Tour, Bilbao espera-nos!

The second day of the tour was pratically spent on the road.

It was already night when we arrived in Barcelona and we weren’t able to see almost anything. The club was Deposito Legal, one of the oldest of the town, open since 1985 and where all the referenced indie spanish bands have played...

This show was... well, it became special... if inicially we had a bad feeling about the technical conditions of the venue not being one of the best, it was quickly putten aside when we’d understood we were going to play for an audience which mainly likes music, has passion and that let themselves evolve... So it was the almost 50 minutes of the show (and time for a little encore), with a short distance keeping us from the crowd, with no secrets and, in the end, the assurance that Barcelona will receive us with arms wide open very soon!

Unfortunately, we haven’t being able to access the internet, but we’re going to do the best we can to upload the diary more frequently.

At this moment we are in the middle of the trip for the third show of the tour, Bilbao awaits us!

Tour Diary - Day 1 - Madrid (Spain)

O dia que tanto esperávamos chegou e para não variar saímos atrasados!

Esta é já a nossa quarta visita a Madrid, cidade que sempre nos recebeu com muito transito e muito stress dos locais! Uma hora e meia para encontrar a sala não é normal, mas finalmente encontrámos o Wurlitzer Ballroom. Antes da entrada em palco tivemos a oportunidade de assistir às duas bandas que abriam a noite. Foi um bom começo de tour e a partir de hoje aguardam-nos cidades e caras novas. Seis horas de viagem e “Hola Barcelona”!

The day we’ve been expecting has finally arrived and like always we’d left town late!

This is already our fourth visit to Madrid, which always received us with lots of traffic and stress throughout the city! One hour and a half to find the venue it’s not usual, but we made it. Before taking the stage, we had the chance to watch the two bands that opened the night.

It was a good start for the tour and from this day forward new places and faces await us. Six hours trip and “Hola Barcelona!”.

European Tour

We are quite excited to announce our first European tour.

From the 3 to the 13 of December we will visit Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Luxembourg and France.

Ten concerts, ten new venues, new countries, new people... we cant wait for the beginning of the tour and to meet all of you!

Como tudo começou...

Mostraram-me este texto hoje, foi escrito em 2006 num blog que podem encontrar aqui! Não faço ideia quem escreveu mas que estava dentro do meio estava.
É bonito ver que alguém se lembra de Castelo Branco quando fala na história da música portuguesa dos anos 90, acho que foi a primeira vez que vi isso acontecer! Sabe bem!

"O triângulo Lisboa-Caldas da Rainha-Castelo Branco efervescia. Os Pinhead Society eram tidos como os líderes do movimento Indie nacional. A revista Raia oferecia compilações de novos valores da Beira Interior. A Bee Keeper distribuía cassetes coloridas e o mundo era simples e feliz. Era assim Portugal nos anos 90.

O final da minha adolescência foi afortunado. Vivia em Peniche (menos de meia hora das Caldas da Rainha, e relativamente próximo de Lisboa) e possuía amigos em Castelo Branco. Assim, encontrava-me por dentro de uma revolução contracultural a acontecer bem à minha porta. Jovens como eu (15/16 anos) criavam música cheia de boas intenções. Vivia-se no espírito "do-it-yourself". Ouvia-se Teenage Fanclub, Built To Spill e Pavement na praia ou à beira da piscina. Trocavam-se e perdiam-se cassetes. Faziam-se excursões só para se poderem ver as bandas da nossa preferência. Viajava-se de autocarro e defendiam-se as consolas da altura (Sega Megadrive nas Caldas da Rainha, Super Nintendo em Castelo Branco) como se só isso importasse na vida. Sorria-se muito e acreditava-se que estávamos a fazer parte de um movimento muito importante em Portugal.

Depois o tempo (o maldito tempo) avançou, e a vida meteu-se pelo meio. Deixaram de se ouvir cassetes. Foi-se estudar e/ou trabalhar. As amizades antigas foram sendo substituídas por novas. Os Pinhead Society acabaram sem se dar muito por isso, e o movimento morre com o falecimento da Elsa, responsável pela Bee Keeper. Poucos foram os que conseguiram singrar no mundo da música. Das Caldas da Rainha, o Manel dos Plasticine juntou-se ao Paulo dos Orange e agora formam a parte criativa do projecto Gomo. De Castelo Branco, os Bubbles deram lugar aos Oscilating Fan, que por sua vez deram lugar aos Norton.

Serve este post para louvar o esforço do blog PlayOnTape. Neste local, encontra-se um retrato de muitas das maquetes (entretanto convertidas para MP3) que marcaram uma época que já não voltará. Bandas que já deixaram de existir à muito, desde o Indie-Pop ao Punk e Metal. Uma fantástica cápsula do tempo, que me fez recordar com saudade outros tempos. Para recordar ou descobrir. Secret Galaxies

Last December i was at Clinic in Alcobaça talking with our great friend Ricardo Coelho from the band Loto. We talked about music and new band names when he bring the name Cavaliers Of Fun as a joke... well now the joke turned into reality and it´s the name of is solo project that debuts with this really nice song called Secret Galaxies.

Boat Beam are a band from Madrid (Spain) that we discovered in MySpace. They have their debut album out this year and you really should listen to their music. The Rain Pauly is their first single and the song we choosed to remix. This is the first Norton remix ever, so hope you like it!
Yesterday we finished other remix for I Might Be Wrong from Berlin (Germany) this one will be released in August, but more news on that soon!

DIF is a free magazine available in Portugal that show what is going on in urban culture. It´s about the newest and most recent happening, talents and fresh ideas in music, fashion, design, architecture, technology, visual arts and performance arts.
Some weeks ago the music editor invited me to choose a record and write about it. My choice was Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix from the brilliant French band Phoenix. Acreditem que ninguém ficou mais triste que nós com esta noticia! Assim que soubermos da nova data avisamos! As melhoras para ele, fiquem com o comunicado enviado pelo Clinic:

"O evento marcado para este Sábado dia 9 de Maio foi cancelado devido a um problema de saúde de Russel Lissack dos Bloc Party. O problema é grave e obrigou ainda a banda a cancelar toda a tour Japonesa que tinha apontada nas duas semanas seguintes. Hallo!
We have some great news... we was invited to play our new single live at Top+, a portuguese TV show in public channel RTP, it will be on air at next Saturday, 25th of April around 14h.
We will record too a small show for Antena 3 radio station, it will be available on audio and video in the internet, when we know more about it we will announce here!
Beside that we are pretty excited with the invitation to play before the Dj Set of Russel Lissack from Bloc Party. This is will be in the 9th of May at Clinic Club in Alcobaça. Clinic is a small venue and it´s only this date so be fast to get your tickets!

Norton son unos jóvenes inquietos que vienen de un pueblecito de remoto de Portugal. Tal vez gracias a eso ya estar alejados de cualquier moda y corriente dominante; han conseguido destilar un pop electrónico, en el que prima la emócion de las melodias a los experimentos. Donde los sintetizadores crean el manto plácido en el que asentar la voz. Y donde sutiles ritmos nos alejan de los brazos de Morfeo para acercarnos a la pista de baile. Tal vez si viniesen de la exótica e fria Islandia o si se llamasen Postal Service ahora hablaríamos de un grupo muy conocido.

2009 live shows will finally start!
As you can see in our February Poster we announced that we will play with guest musicians in the Caldas da Rainha concert, but the rehearsals went so great that they will play in all the February concerts.
If you come to see us in Toledo, Murcia, Caldas da Rainha or Madrid we will be four Nortons plus two more guitars, yes we will play with three guitars, and let me tell you that it sounds really good and powerful!
We´d like to thank in advance to Manuel Simões and Miguel Nicolau for sharing the shows with us!
Tomorrow we will play for the first in Toledo, Spain. The concert will be at Picaro Cafe-Teatro and will start at 22h with free entrance! There will be no Dj Set after the concert as previously announced!
The day after we play at Microsonidos Festival in Murcia, Spain.
Two more bands will play that night: Olee Nyman from Sweden and Ross from Spain. And after the shows Norton Dj Set! All this at 12 & Medio Club with free entry!

The last three nights we were in the studio here in Castelo Branco recording a version of a hit single from 1989... which one? For that you have to wait, but not long!
Next week we will mix it at the Golden Pony Studios in Lisbon and during February we will make it available for all of you! Soon we will put here some photos and videos of the recording sessions.
